TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Teaching has always been an integral part of my professional life. In Sri Lanka, when I was a Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, I was involved in clinical undergraduate teaching, lectures and examinations. I also lectured at the Midwifery Training School and at the School of Physiotherapy. In Darlington Memorial hospital, being the only Registrar, I was responsible for co-ordinating all the educational activities of our department, including that of Journal club.

My formal teaching experience started at University College London, where I gave undergraduate lectures for 3 years to an audience of about 120 students. I have been responsible for tutorials for pre MRCOG students.

During this period I attended a workshop on " How to Lecture" as part of an in-service training program for lecturers at University College, London.

I was approved as a “ recognised teacher of University of London “ by the University senate in 1984.

In Adelaide, as clinical lecturer in Reproductive Medicine, I was involved in undergraduate lectures, as well as clinical teaching to our Resident medical officers in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In North Tees, I was involved in teaching medical students from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, midwifery students and junior doctors for their DRCOG and MRCOG examinations.

In Stirling, I was responsible for co-ordinating the weekly formal tutorials, which are primarily aimed at Senior House officers preparing for their DRCOG exams and Medical students. More than 75% of our SHOs sit this exam with a very high pass rate. In addition to covering all the important topics every six months, special tutorials are also arranged for the exam candidates prior to each exam. All MRCOG candidates have an evening tutorial once a week for 3 months prior to the theory paper and thereafter-clinical sessions once the theory results are known. .

As district tutor, I was responsible for the structured training and assessment of our junior doctors. I have also participated as a pilot site for OSCE examination prior to being implemented for DRCOG.

In Harold Wood, I am the co-ordinator for the undergraduate education. We have medical students from 3 Medical schools. The students from University College London spend half of their core teaching (3 weeks) with us. The Royal London/Barts students mainly come for 2 weeks of revision. The American University in Caribbean sends their students for whole of their core teaching (6weeks to us. The latter teaching is carried in a structured manner in a 6 weeks module and majority of students pass their American licensing exam in their first attempt.  I am also the district tutor of the Royal College and training program director in charge of the Postgraduate education. I am actively involved in the training of our MRCOG candidates preparing for their part 2.Students from all the neighbouring hospitals including Royal London, Newham General hospital, Whips cross hospital and Watford General hospital attend this course.

I have been involved as a research student in a certificate course in Postgraduate medical education conducted by University of Dundee.
